An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic dietetic technician to permanently join our paediatric metabolic dietetic and multidisciplinary team at the QMC as part of the joint East Midlands Metabolic Service

The dietetic technician is a highly valued member of the dietetic and specialist multidisciplinary team (MDT) within the paediatric metabolic services at Nottingham Children’s Hospital.

You will work closely with the dietitians to support patients and families nutritional needs within the specialisms of metabolic medicine . You will be joining a large department with approximately 30 paediatric dietitians, supported by 2 technicians and 1 assistant , with a wealth of opportunity for support, learning and development.

Main duties of the job

You will liaise closely with a team of specialist paediatric dietitians to undertake the following tasks:

Gather information to deliver dietetic care to inpatient and outpatient children and young people with inherited metabolic diseases , using telephone, digital solutions and direct contact with patients, carers and health care professionals

Capture sensitive/confidential data into databases, menu analysis, and use trust-specific computer software

Implement, adapt and progress treatment plans within agreed protocols

Deliver individual/group education ,menu development and cooking support to patients and healthcare professionals . To conduct home/school visits, and attend metabolic outpatient clinics

Arrange events for metabolic patients and contribute to our quarterly Phenylketonuria (PKU) newsletter

Report laboratory results to families of children with PKU, under the guidance of the specialist metabolic dietitian

Develop surveys to audit service performance

The Nottingham Children's Hospital (NCH) is based at the Queens Medical Centre campus and is part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). We provide In-patient and out-patient care for children up to the age of 19 years old.

With 97 beds, we care for around 40,000 children each year from Nottinghamshire and beyond, treating a full range of conditions, including planned and emergency treatment and surgery, Burns and Plastics, Neurological conditions, Oncology, Paediatric critical care, Renal conditions and transplantation, Gastroenterology, and Spinal and Orthopaedic care.

The Children’s Dietetic Therapy team at NCH is a friendly and supportive department who work closely alongside the wider MDT, providing excellent evidence based care and innovative ways of working.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

Supports the work of the Dietetic and Nutrition service by:

Advising and monitoring patients with specific medical conditions based on agreed protocols.

Planning, delivering and evaluating educational and health promotion activities for individuals and groups.

Working within departmental team structures.

As part of this role it is essential that you will be able to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) accordingly to national and local guidance.

Training and Qualification

Essential criteria

  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent in relevant area such as nutrition, health care or catering.
  • Evidence of literacy and numeracy, such as GCSE maths and English grades A-C
  • IT qualification such as ECDL or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • leadership training or similar

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working with people who are ill, at least three years preferred.
  • Experience of working in health care.

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of specific patient conditions gained through experience.

Planning and organisation skills

  • Able to plan and organise work load of self and others, including daily tasks and longer term planning, despite interruptions and changing priorities.
