Job Description:
Job title: Lead Structurer Gas and Oil

The desk is part of the Front Office with a direct reporting line to the CCO. It sits alongside the origination and trading teams providing wide structuring, valuation, and deal approval support for various business initiatives. We also support management and traders with live deal management including booking representations and risk management.
The function covers market derivatives and bespoke virtual and asset based structures on all commodities traded by EDFT and its affiliates in liquid and illiquid horizons.
The function work closely with middle office and control functions with the goal of executing profitable deals that meet the company’s required rate of return, capital utilisation criteria, in compliance with EDF group risk policies.
Position purpose
This is a Lead Structurer role with the main responsibility of valuing commodity derivatives and structured deals and supporting origination in deal structuring and negotiation of terms with clients. This involves:
  • understanding of commercial terms of deals including financial derivatives and real options
  • understanding of entity level P&L and risk capital requirements,
  • structuring complete deal payoffs,
  • proposing and explaining an appropriate valuation approach,
  • pricing using optimal model(s) and informing on the results and adequate trading/deal management strategy,
  • presenting deal economics to Management on behalf of the stakeholders
Other duties and responsibilities as may arise and may be assigned by Management, this may include market analysis, model development, and support for information library and data infrastructure.
Professional experience
The ideal candidate would have:
  • Extensive structuring/valuation experience within the energy or finance sector in a similar role. Preference for experience in the energy sector and understanding of energy market fundamentals and physical constraints.
  • Track record of working autonomously on complex structured deals, including working with the traders, originators and other business groups as appropriate, to bring deals through to execution.
  • Demonstrated experience in analysing deal commercial terms, identifying the underlying risk components and constructing appropriate valuation models from the term sheet.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of complex derivative instruments coupled with understanding of valuation and risk analysis methods.
  • Understanding of risk, both hedge-able risk and residual risks in structured contracts, and developing a practical approach to valuation issues.
  • Strong technical and model development skills applied to commercial deals.
  • Specific deal types dealt with by the group include complex swaps, options strategies, storage, swing, interconnectors, virtual power plants, LNG flexibility, asset-based flexibility including renewables, weather contingent products, exotic options, prepayments, book sales and buy-outs, profit shares/JVs modelling, etc.
This role is at a senior level within an existing and well established team. It would suit someone with a solid experience in a structuring or quantitate strategist type role and a track record of executing deals. Alternatively, an experienced model validation professional with a passion for applied valuation and margin making would be considered.
This is a job of detail; requiring an utmost attention to detail, competence and autonomy in delivering structuring and valuation solutions, top grade presentation skills as well as professionalism in interactions on all corporate levels.
Technical skills
Required technical experience and knowledge includes:
  • Degree level education or comparable in a highly quantitative subject (for example quantitative finance, mathematics, science, engineering). Masters or PhD level qualifications or equivalent work experience are desirable.
  • Demonstrated sound knowledge of mathematics applied to finance and/or commodities.
  • Practical knowledge of a wide range of valuation algorithms and calibration methods within a consistent mathematical framework with ability to develop industrialised and widely usable models and tools
  • Excellent computer programming skills. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel including VBA programming is necessary, other scientific software packages such as MATLAB, Python, and statistical packages is desirable.
Personal skills
It is a multifaceted role, which not only requires strong quantitative skills but also commercial acumen, communication and client facing skills. The candidate would be responsible for liaising with originators, traders and Management as well as regularly interacting with other pricing team members, quants, risk management, credit and legal teams.
  • Diligence, work ownership, pragmatism and high degree of autonomy in solving problems is required
  • Applied notion of responsibility, authority and accountability for one’s deliverables
  • Strong influencing skills would be an advantage, with the ability to interact with the commercial stakeholders of a transaction, as well as other business stakeholders.
  • Active interest in developing understanding of energy markets and their dynamics, alternative modelling methods, and applying this knowledge to valuation of real world transactions’
  • Ability to communicate complex issues in an understandable manner to traders, sales and Management
  • Comfortable with working to deadlines, and multitasking (self-organisation) in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent team player, and prepared to mentor junior members of the team
