The post-holder will join an enthusiastic and welcoming team of Geriatrician Consultants, in a dynamic and innovative department.

The specialty of Health Care of the Older Person (HCOP) sits managerially within the Division of Medicine alongside Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Stroke Medicine , Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. The Division of Medicine is split into 3 directorates. HCOP sits within the Integrated Care Directorate with Stroke.

NUH is a Centre of Excellence in the clinical care, teaching and research of Health Care of Older People. We have developed a broad range of subspecialties to meet patient need across the health community and our aim is to ensure that this continues.

The service has the ambition to enable Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment for all older people with frailty that might benefit within Nottinghamshire. This ambition has seen an increase in consultant geriatrician numbers over the last five to ten years, providing opportunities to develop new and innovative models of service delivery.

Main duties of the job

Working in the HCOP specialty the post-holders will be responsible for:

  • Share consultant responsibility on 1 of our 8 acute/subacute HCOP wards, improve our commitment to frail older people within the acute medical and frailty pathway
  • Cover of our HCOP Frailty admissions unit, D57
  • In-reach into acute admission areas

  • Ropewalk House is where we provide a range of outpatient services, including hearing services

We have 90 wards and around 1,700 beds.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointees will be expected to fulfil the following duties with the agreed Job Plan.
Clinical - A full range of HCOP emergency and elective patients are admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care.

Clinical Skills/Experience

  • Evidenced technical skills as described in the job description
  • Demonstrable broad experience of acute medicine
  • Demonstrable broad training in the full range of HCOP specialities including rehabilitation
  • Demonstrate a special interest in acute geriatric medicine within the acute medicine pathway

Desirable criteria

  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors

Management Skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to work in a team.
  • Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery.
  • Evidence of management training

Desirable criteria

  • Higher management degree or qualification or training
  • Experience of change management
  • Demonstrate engagement and delivery of service development.
  • Demonstrate special interest, expertise and effectiveness in an area of management eg governance, service delivery

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
