The Role

As part of our expansion, we are seeking to appoint an Academic Associate in Sport and Exercise Science. As an Academic Associate you will undertake a PhD within our Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Health (PAtCH) research group whilst also being employed by the University to support teaching and assessment on our undergraduate programmes, particularly Sport and Exercise Science. Academic Associate positions are fixed-term for four years and include a tuition fee waiver/scholarship for a full-time PhD.

Timetabled teaching duties during our two semesters will not exceed six contact hours per week, which may include delivery of laboratory sessions, seminars and tutorials. Training is provided to support Academic Associates develop their teaching-related skills and professional competencies alongside their doctoral research.

We are seeking an Academic Associate to propose projects related to one of these three areas:

1. Sedentary behaviour and cardiovascular health (Main Supervisor: Dr Sophie Carter)

2. Physical activity/exercise and vascular ageing (Main Supervisor: Dr Amy Campbell)

3. Exercise and cardiac structure, function and mechanics (Main Supervisor: Dr Alex Beaumont)

Applicants are required to develop a 1,500-word research proposal (not including references) as part of their application. Your research proposal will show us that you understand current thinking in this topic area and are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to get started on a large research project.

Required Skills and Experience

Successful applicants must have an honours degree (2:1 or above) from a UK HEI, or an internationally recognised equivalent. The degree must be in a discipline that is relevant to the research.

We are looking for a candidate who brings the following attributes to the position:

  • Knowledge and experience to teach on physiology, physical activity, and exercise and health modules
  • Highly motivated with an excellent understanding of the role of physical activity and/or sedentary behaviour and/or exercise in promoting physical health
  • Excellent understanding of research methodologies
  • A proven ability to work well both independently and with others in a research environment
  • A high standard of written English and the ability to communicate clearly in both academic (academic colleagues) and non-academic contexts (patients/participants) where and when appropriate.
