Job Description

The Wellcome - Medical Research Council Cambridge Stem Cell Institute is an international centre of excellence for stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Scientists in the Institute collaborate to advance our knowledge of various stem cell types and to perform pioneering work in translational research areas, providing the foundation for new medical treatments (https://www.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/).

The Core Bioinformatics group led by Dr Irina Mohorianu (https://www.corebioinf.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/, https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=62xXdPoAAAAJ&hl=en) develops and implements novel bulk and single-cell next-generating sequencing approaches. They then design machine-learning approaches for integrating these datasets and for underlining causality by inferring Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs) (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5385134/; https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.03.003178v2; https://academic.oup.com/nar/article/49/14/e83/6291165; https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.01.31.478592v1).

This project, focusing on alternative splicing at bulk and single-cell level will be carried out in collaboration with several CSCI group who will generate the sequencing datasets.

The project is built on two aims: [1] to develop pipelines that facilitate the data mining of datasets focused on alternative splicing, [2] to characterise the impact of alternative splicing on the inference and characterisation of Gene Regulatory Networks. The impact on RNA velocities and trajectories will also be assessed.

For this joint project, we are looking for a dedicated data scientist, with a strong interest in applying mathematical/ computational methods to biological datasets. They will work alongside wet-lab researchers who are generating the datasets which will be analysed.

Requirements:

Successful applicants should have an MSc/ MRes in the field of data science, applied mathematics or computer science. Additional technical expertise that would be useful for this position include analysis and integration of next-generation sequencing datasets, mainly bulk or single-cell RNAseq. It is essential that the post-holder is organised, able to work collaboratively as a member of a team and can communicate effectively and clearly.

Start date is flexible but ideally July 2023.

The post is offered on part-time basis, at 0.8 FTE.
