The role

Communication Specialist College are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, highly motivated and inspirational individual to Lead the English curriculum within the college as well as deliver English to young people with specialist communication needs including, Deafness, Autism and Learning Disabilities.


The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the English department and developing the embedding of English throughout the college curriculum. Responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the delivery of English from Entry level through to GCSE
  • Lead and develop an English curriculum offer that meets the needs of students, employers and stakeholders now and in the future.
  • Lead, motivate and develop the English curriculum across the college to develop an outstanding learning environment.
  • Lead on the management of effective quality assurance processes for English.
  • Inspire imaginative and effective approaches to the delivery of teaching and learning within English across the college.
  • Lead and develop schemes of work that provide individual learning that are used effectively for all courses within the English department.
  • Act as a role model to staff and students.
  • To ensure efficient and effective range of processes, systems and procedures are in place for planning, monitoring and delivery of high-quality teaching, learning and assessment that comply with funding and awarding body regulations.
  • Deliver high quality teaching, learning and assessment
  • Will regularly assess students in order to track and monitor progress and maintain comprehensive, up to date, student/subject records and provide information, as requested.
  • To mark student work as set out in the Colleges TLA policy and provide good feedback to drive improvement, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Embed English and Maths into all lessons.
  • Will set work for his/her classes where absence is known in advance and setting work for absent colleagues where required.
  • To oversee the identification and monitoring of students at risk of underperforming and ensure that clear actions and strategies for support are implemented to improve outcomes.
  • To maintain accurate records of students’ retention, achievement and attendance using MIS and provide reports on student progress as required.
  • To undertake data checks as directed by Managers.
  • To set and / or invigilate students’ examinations as appropriate and necessary.
  • To participate in team meetings and contribute to planning, development and review activities, including course review, self-assessment and other College QI procedures.

The successful candidate will have a formal Teaching and English qualifications and be able to deliver English from entry level through to GCSE.
